Snow

Coming from Maryland, winter in New Hampshire was quite shocking to me. Days are shorter, temperatures go below freezing, and there's snow around for months! It can take some adjusting, and three winters into my college experience I've figured out some ways to keep myself healthy and motivated, and to have fun in Dartmouth winters. So, without further ado, here are 10 tips to make the best of winter at Dartmouth.

1.         Exercise!

Go to the gym or go for a walk or run. No matter what you do, you're benefiting your body by relieving stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle

2.         Eat a Healthy Diet

What you eat and when you eat can greatly affect your mood and energy. So, eat a well-balanced diet with healthy foods to provide your body with the nutrients you need

3.         Get Some Sun

Winter days are shorter and darker, and with the cold it's easy to stay in all day. The sun provides Vitamin D and improves your mood — so get out there and soak up the sun!

4.         Act on Your Resolutions

Whatever your New Year Resolutions may be, fulfill them! Go into the new year with a positive attitude and accomplish your goals. Get your friends and family involved too!

5.         Be Prepared

As you start off a new quarter, be proactive and get organized. Manage your time well and you'll have an awesome winter!

6.         Treat Yourself

Having something to look forward to can keep anyone motivated. So, plan something exciting for you like a night out, a sporting event, shopping, etc.

7.         Relax

Winter term moves faster than other terms and it can make each day very busy. So, remember to take time off for yourself—scheduling some free time can help relieve stress and avoid burn-out!

8.         Embrace the Winter

Don't avoid the cold and the snow—look to see what it has to offer! Get involved in a winter activity like ice skating, snowboarding, skiing, or sledding

9.         Get Social Support

Have your friends and family involved in your life. Let them know what's going on and they can be your support network for your victories or worries

10.       Catch some Zzzzz's

Sleep is so important for the body. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night and try to keep your bedtime and waking time consistent. This will normalize your sleep pattern and keep you energized

And, of course, don't forget to make some snowmen!
