Homecoming Bonfire

Homecoming at Dartmouth is always a special time. The bonfire, the alums coming back, and the general feeling of excitement that permeates the campus are always fun memories that any Dartmouth student and alum can look back on positively. Because of the pandemic and also being abroad last fall, my last homecoming was my first, all the way back in 2019. So this year felt very special, as I felt as if I was experiencing homecoming for the first time again, granted with different people and different perspectives.

First off, the friends and communities I participated in homecoming with are different than my first homecoming. I got to hang out with my friends in my fraternity as we watched the freshman go

around the fire, as well as going to the homecoming football game versus Harvard. I also got to hang out with my friends in my religious community, including seeing a performance with a band a priest at the Catholic student center is a part of. These experiences were really fun, especially because they showed me how much things can change in only a couple of years. In my freshman year, I did not know practically any of the current people I call my friends. However, throughout my time at Dartmouth, I have met new people from various walks of life, and have deepened those relationships.

Second, I felt connected to the college community as a whole. Seeing alumni come back, including some that had graduated in recent years, made me really see Dartmouth as not just a college in Hanover, but also as a community that stretches across the world. Whether it was meeting an alum from 1989 and hearing his experiences to seeing the recent graduates who got me excited about post-grad life, I realized that Dartmouth has a knack for creating a great community.

This might be my last homecoming as a student, but it certainly won't be my last one ever!
