Dartmouth requires all juniors to take one physical education class. There are a number of ways to satisfy this requirement, from playing a varsity or club sport to taking a spin class at the gym. If you're not particularly sporty, you can even take a course through the Academic Skills Center called Learning at Dartmouth instead. I figured that I would take advantage of the cold weather by signing up for skiing lessons at the Dartmouth Skiway. Fun fact: Dartmouth is only one of three colleges in the nation with its own skiway.

Family picture at Mount Sunapee

While this wasn't my first time skiing, I actually learned how to ski for the first time this year—just two weeks. My family decided to celebrate New Year's Eve by learning how to ski at Mount Sunapee, which is just a 30 minute drive from Dartmouth. To my surprise, I really liked skiing, especially since it is easy to catch on after learning the basics. With just one lesson, I went from struggling to put on a ski to flying down a carpet. Imagine how much progress I could make if I had the entire term to practice.

Picking up my ski gear from Leverone

I was a little apprehensive about signing up for skiing lessons at Dartmouth, since the sport can be costly. But Dartmouth's Physical Education program had a subsidized price: $350 for seven lessons, bus transportation, and ski rentals sounded like a good deal to me. Plus, Dartmouth refunds 50% or 100% of the cost for students on financial aid who attend 6/7 lessons. Two weeks before our first lesson, I headed to Leverone Field House House to be fitted for skis, poles, and boots, and then I was off!

Getting a feel for the snow

I shuffled into my skis on Sunday, just in time for my 9:30am class. The group headed to the carpets or ramps that would take us up the incline, and I worked in small pairs to improve my turning technique. Luckily, I hadn't forgotten how to ski. But there were also separate instructors for students who had never skied before. By the end of the session, I realized my turns still needed a lot of work, but I can't wait to come back! One of my major goals for the term is being able to ski in parallel, which is a more efficient, less tiring way of moving across the snow.
