Q&A with Bronze Medalist and Two-Time Olympian Ariana Ramsey '22
Ariana Ramsey played for the Dartmouth women's rugby team for five years and helped lead the team to win two NCAA Championships. She competed for Team USA in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. I sat down with her to talk about Dartmouth's impact on her career.
- What initially attracted you to Dartmouth?
Everybody was so nice, and it seemed like there was a great, genuine team culture, and that's what drew me to it. It was diverse. Everybody seemed to love each other. I really liked the coach.
- How did you balance athletics with an Ivy League education?
I think it's just a matter of communicating with my professors because there were a lot of times I had to leave for Olympic camps, and they were very supportive. I was always having to figure out how I get my work done and making sure that I'm understanding the concepts and trying to get straight A's and fully study. It was really, really hard, I will say.
- What was your favorite Dartmouth team tradition?
We have team songs! We celebrate whenever we win a game, or after every game, we just sing team songs together, like rugby songs.
- What support from Dartmouth did you receive in order to be named to two Olympic teams?
At some point I had to transition from the high school level to a new level, and college took me to that second level because the contact is higher. People are actually tackling here. I had to be faster than I was in high school. It definitely took me to the next level of play, which was really important for my growth and making it to the Olympics.
- What advice would you give to prospective college athletes who are looking at Dartmouth?
Go to Dartmouth if you like rugby and if you're good at rugby. I feel like Dartmouth is the best rugby school you could possibly choose because we have the academics and we have the resources that you need to make connections. Our team has a great coach who's really good at recruiting.
- What do you think makes Dartmouth stand apart from other schools?
The fact that we're known as the college in the woods. That makes everybody feel more connected, and you're closer to everyone because of Dartmouth's small size.
- I have a kind of a fun question, but do they really have cardboard beds in Paris?
Yes, the beds are cardboard, but I got used to it!
