It's pretty commonplace for a Dartmouth student's inbox to be filled with emails from different departments and student organizations about various events open to the campus. What was a little surprising, however, was receiving an unusually high number of emails (21, to be exact) about an event called the Sophomore Summer Soiree. The emails advertised a free dinner, an opportunity for dialogue, free swag, and raffles. At a certain point, I figured that was my sign to see what this brand-new tradition was all about.

Held outdoors at the BEMA (Big Empty Meeting Area surrounded by grass), the soiree was a time of celebration and reflection. While the event was rescheduled due to the rain, the weather ended up being perfect the next day! We were treated to a love dinner, colorful mocktails, and a custom Dartmouth cooling bandana, which I didn't even know existed!

What made the evening especially memorable were the student speakers. Three students shared their personal experiences and advice about sophomore summer. Particularly memorable were the words of Chara Lyons '25 (pictured on the cover of this post!). She opened with a song before launching into a powerful speech about making the most of sophomore summer and getting out of your comfort zone. She is an incredible speaker, and I found myself hanging onto her every word.

Being part of the first Sophomore Summer Soiree felt special, and I'm glad I got to witness the beginning of something that hopefully grows into a long-standing Dartmouth tradition. I may not have won any of the raffle prizes (gift cards to local Hanover businesses, Legos, Jellycats, and Apple AirPods), but the advice I received was priceless.
