A crowd of people watching a concert, while fireworks fill the night sky

I love the 4th of July! I love the fireworks and the barbeques, and I love the feeling of summer. When I found out I would be in D.C. this summer, living and working as a First-Year Fellow for the Rockefeller Center, I was most excited to experience the 4th in the nation's capital, and it lived up to the hype!

The day started with my roommate and me taking the metro to the National Archives. Every Fourth of July, the Archives puts on a dramatic reenactment of the Declaration of Independence. Actors dress up as the Founding Fathers and read aloud the document on the steps of the Archives, while a massive crowd of people cheer from the street.

Once the reenactment ended, we made our way inside to the Archives' rotunda. Here lies the real Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. I had never seen them in person before, so it was cool.

The actors also came to the rotunda for meet and greets, so we got pictures with Ben Franklin and Lafayette!

Once we finished with the activities inside the Archives, like signing a replica of the Declaration of Independence, we walked outside and found a spot to watch the 4th of July parade, which walked right past the Archives' steps. At this point, more of our friends arrived at the Archives to watch the parade. I loved the parade! It was so amazing seeing marching bands and dance groups from all over the country perform their art.

After the parade was over, the whole group made our way over to a folk festival happening in one of the parks. We attempted to watch some of the performances, but we got distracted by a skateboarding exhibition going on. We watched people skateboard for a long time, until we got hungry.

After a late lunch, we made our way over to the Capitol steps. As interns on the Hill, we have exclusive access to the steps to watch the 4th of July concert and fireworks over the National Mall. While the concert didn't start until 8 pm, we got there a couple of hours early, because we were worried about not having seats. It was so much fun to spend a couple of hours on the Capitol steps just us. We talked, played card games, and admired the city.

Eventually, the steps began to fill, and the concert started. It was so lovely! The Temptations and the Beach Boys performed, which was so surreal. We sang along and danced on the steps! During the final song, the fireworks started going off, and they were so beautiful! At one point, the fireworks spelled out U.S.A., which was so cool.

When the night ended, we hopped on the metro, which was packed, but we didn't mind. Spending the 4th in D.C. was such a fantastic experience, and I am so happy I got the opportunity to do it with my friends!
