Candidacy Decisions

Understand the basics.

Early Decision:

Early Decision applications are reviewed in the same manner as applications for regular admission. Candidacies will receive one of three possible decisions:

  • Admitted. Congratulations! If admitted early, you will be expected to enroll at Dartmouth and withdraw any applications you have submitted to other colleges. Admitted students who have applied for financial aid will receive an estimated financial aid award with their decision.
  • Deferred. The Admissions Committee will review all deferred candidacies again during our regular admissions process. Deferred applicants who are admitted during our regular process have until May 1 to reply to our offer of admission.
  • Denied. Applicants whose candidacies have been denied during the Early Decision application process cannot re-apply until the following academic year.
Regular Decision:

Regular Decision applications are reviewed in the same manner as applications for early admission. Candidacies will receive one of three possible decisions:

  • Admitted. Congratulations! If admitted, you will be expected to let us know your intent to enroll by May 1.
  • Wait list.  See the glossary item below to learn more about Dartmouth’s wait list.
  • Denied. We wish all the best as you choose from among your other college options.
Transfer:

Transfer candidacies will receive one of three possible decisions:

  • Admitted. Congratulations! If admitted, you will be expected to let us know your intent to enroll towards the end of May.
  • Wait list. See the glossary item below to learn more about Dartmouth’s wait list.
  • Denied. We wish all the best as you choose from among your other college options.
