Most science classes at Dartmouth have a required lab that happens on a weekly basis. I've had three lab classes so far, and each lab has helped me in my classes.

At most schools, the lab is an entirely different class. Here at Dartmouth, the lab is a part of the regular science class. This has helped me because the lab grade is often higher than your grade in the class, so the lab grade can boost your overall grade.

The lab meets once a week for about three to four hours. You get to pick your time slot based on your availability and preference, and there are about twenty other students in your section. For the entire term, you have the same lab partner who is a tremendous help when you are working through the lab.

During the lab, the class works through a single concept you are learning in class. There are several graduate students who are there to help and answer any questions, and a professor oversees the entire lab. Lab practicals vary, and I have done everything from measuring the downward motion of a piece of paper to doing DNA sequencing.

The labs are beginner friendly, which means any student can do a lab class; in fact, a lab class is part of the graduation requirement.

I have really appreciated Dartmouth labs because they enhance the material in class that we are learning and put it into practice. It also is a nice way to meet new people in the class and get hands-on experience.
