Today is my beautiful mother's birthday; and as I enter my last year as a student blogger, I want to dedicate this blog post to her:

When I first began my college search process, I initially imagined myself staying close to home—perhaps in Texas or the West Coast, where I frequently visited growing up. The idea of going to college 2,347 miles away had not crossed my mind until the summer before my senior year; one day, while reviewing my college list with my mom, she encouraged me to look beyond the narrow geographical checkboxes I had set for myself. With her support, I began exploring colleges out on the East Coast and ultimately found myself most drawn to Dartmouth, where I was able to envision four years in Hanover and ultimately apply early decision.

My mom is the strongest, boldest, and most fearless women I have in my life. Rather than viewing mistakes and errors as failures, she has taught me to view them as gifts and experiences. Discomfort, to her, is welcomed and embraced, and new experiences are encouraged—qualities that have fundamentally shaped my time at Dartmouth. The last three years have been nothing short of a whirlwind, but Sandra Oh—in her 2025 Dartmouth commencement address—has captured my experience so succinctly: "Nothing has taught me more than being with discomfort. It can be our greatest learning opportunity. And it is also inevitable."

While being far from home is a challenge sometimes, I'm grateful that my mom has been able to visit me every so often, which I don't take for granted. Additionally, because Dartmouth's winter break—aka "winterim"—is around six weeks long, I treasure the time I get to spend with her. As we recently just moved my brother into college, I've been reminded of how much of our experiences is shared with her and also her investment in our journeys.

At the heart of my college experience lies my mom, the center of it all. No amount of adjectives can accurately paint a picture of the person she is, but to put it simply, she is the sun: the most important star in my universe. We often joke about whether we might have been related in our previous lives; and while that is unknown, I do know how lucky I am to call her my mom in this lifetime.

Happy Birthday, my beautiful mommy.

Love,

Joanna
