Chinese New Year Celebration at Dartmouth College
Growing up, Chinese New Year was always the most important celebration in my hometown. This year, I was excited to see the holiday take root on campus in ways that made it feel just as meaningful, even while being far from home.
For the first time, Dartmouth hosted a school-wide celebration, with Foco (The Class of 1953 Commons) serving a Chinese New Year – themed dinner, complete with traditional decorations, Chinese snacks, and an abundance of Chinese dishes. The atmosphere felt even more special with Chinese songs playing in the background.
Beyond the campus-wide celebration, students also found their own ways to mark the occasion. Our Class of 2027 Chinese students gathered for dinner at Han Fusion, the local Chinese restaurant, squeezing in a brief but meaningful celebration amidst the demands of midterms.

Student organizations played a major role in bringing the festivities to life. The Dartmouth Chinese Student Association (DCSA) partnered with the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and the Special Programs and Events Committee to host a Chinese New Year celebration at the computer science building. The event featured catered food from Han Fusion, a photo booth, and activities that brought students together in a warm, communal setting.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Language House hosted its own celebration, bringing together professors from the Chinese department and students for an evening of calligraphy, karaoke, and, of course, more Han Fusion. Other cultural organizations also joined in—the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) served phở in honor of Tết, and the Dartmouth Malaysian Student Organization held a Lunar New Year event of its own.
Even though we couldn't be home for the holiday, these celebrations helped recreate the spirit of Chinese New Year on campus. It was heartening to see the Dartmouth community embrace the traditions of Lunar New Year, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural appreciation across campus.
