Sanborn library in autumn

Dartmouth is a place full of cherished traditions that connect students to the campus in meaningful ways. This week, I'd like to share one of our lesser-known but deeply beloved traditions—Sanborn Library's daily teatime.

Every weekday, from 4 to 5 pm, the English department's Sanborn Library transforms into a cozy space where students can unwind with a cup of tea. Stepping inside Sanborn, with its wood-paneled walls and grand Georgian architecture, feels like entering another era—a serene and scholarly refuge amidst the busyness of campus life. Sanborn tea is a simple, calming ritual—a student server pours tea from a white ceramic teapot, and cookies are available for small donations. The atmosphere is peaceful, with students quietly working or reading, enjoying a break from the day's activities.

Sanborn tea has become a daily ritual that I look forward to, especially after my 2A class that ends at 4:10 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, just in time for me to slip into the library and settle in. There's something comforting in the routine—grabbing a cup of tea, finding a cozy corner, and diving into my work while surrounded by the quiet buzz of fellow students. It's a chance to pause and recharge before the rest of the evening unfolds. The space itself is welcoming, and it feels like a place apart from the bustle of campus life.
