Living Learning Communities—so what are they?
I moved from my first-year dorm to Triangle House for my sophomore year!
Triangle House is one of Dartmouth's Living Learning Communities (LLCs), designed to create a welcoming space for students to explore LGBTQIA+ topics, identities, and histories. Open to both LGBTQIA+ students and allies, Triangle House fosters a supportive and inclusive environment while enriching the intellectual and cultural fabric of campus life.
One thing to know about Triangle House is that you don't need to identify as LGBTQIA+ to live here. It's open to any student who wants to learn more about these topics. Throughout the year, Triangle House hosts various events, such as Sunday brunches, film screenings, and dinners, providing opportunities for students to connect, make new friends, and engage in thoughtful discussions while enjoying great food.
So, what exactly are LLCs? They're built around the idea that residence halls can be more than just places to live; they can be spaces where students, faculty, and staff come together to share an interdisciplinary, community-based learning experience. Dartmouth aims to make learning holistic, and LLCs are the perfect blend of education and everyday life, fostering deeper connections and engagement within a residential community. Plus, they offer some of the best living conditions on campus, though they can be a bit remote—still, on a small campus like ours, that's hardly a drawback.
There are various different types of LLCs:
1.) Identity-specific houses: the Asian and Asian American LLC, Hillel LLC, LALAC House, Native American House, Shabazz Center for Intellectual Inquiry, and Triangle House
2.) Language-learning houses: Chinese Language House, La Casa, and the Max Kade German Center
3.) Shared interest communities: Foley House, the Interfaith LLC, and the Sustainable Living Center
4.) Programs with a Global Perspective: Great Issues Scholars in Residence, Arabic Language Program, French Language Program, and the Italian Language Program
This year, I'm excited to make Triangle House my home and dive into everything it has to offer. I'm looking forward to meeting more people across campus and building new connections through the community events and casual hangouts that make Triangle House such a unique space. It feels like the perfect place to explore different perspectives while getting to know others who are just as curious and open-minded.
