A Week In My Life: Hanover Off Term Edition!
You can go anywhere or do anything during your off terms, but for two of my consecutive off terms (junior summer and senior fall), I decided to stay in Hanover! I've been working full-time for the Admissions office as a senior fellow and staying involved with my campus extracurricular organizations outside of work. Here's a week in my life during one of my Hanover off terms; while the 9-5 lifestyle is an adjustment from a standard Dartmouth term, I really enjoyed settling into a routine and appreciating the mundane joys of day-to-day life. Of course, every week looks different. This week, in particular, ended up being one where I attended a lot of events for my Greek house in my free time, but you'll see a variety of other things I got up to as well!

Sunday
I had the time to sleep in this Sunday, which I always appreciate! This Sunday was mostly a day to catch up on things at home before the work week started: I did my laundry, cleaned my room and my rats’ cage, and organized some move-in logistics for my house’s residents this coming fall. I also had some time to call my mom, which is always nice because I almost never actually get to see her. In the evening, a friend of mine made some delicious tacos (seriously, probably the best I've ever had) that we enjoyed with our housemates and a couple of our next-door neighbors! Before I went to bed, I took some time to journal, something I’ve been trying to make a habit of recently.

Monday
My Monday morning started with a sunny walk to the Admissions office—I live just three blocks away, which is super convenient (I promise I'm happier than I look in the BeReal)! Once I got to work, I did some writing for my blog and sent some emails to recruit panelists for virtual admissions events, among other things. In the afternoon, I gave a campus tour to a group of prospective students and their families. Being a tour guide is how I got involved in admissions in the first place, and this was my 67th campus tour. I found out recently that I have the highest tour count of any current undergraduate, which was both surprising and exciting! After going home for the evening, I sat down to watch Coraline at my Greek house’s weekly open-to-campus movie night. It’s one of my favorite childhood movies, and it was a nice way to indulge in nostalgia and wind down for the night.

Tuesday
Today’s work day was a busy one—first thing in the morning, I delivered an info session to a group of students and parents before they headed out on their campus tour. The presentation entails 30 minutes of uninterrupted public speaking, which was a little scary leading up to my first couple of info sessions, but over the summer, I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with it, and it’s a lot of fun! My favorite part is talking to families with questions afterward, especially because it always encourages me to reflect on elements of my Dartmouth experience I never would’ve otherwise. In my opinion, that's been the most rewarding part of working for Dartmouth's Admissions office overall: there are constant opportunities to engage in reflection on my own time at Dartmouth, which has been really positive for my personal growth. In the evening, I once again found myself getting ready to watch a movie with a friend–it’s been a pretty movie-heavy week so far, but I finally got to see Midsommar after months of hearing that I absolutely had to watch it, and it was definitely worth it.

Wednesday
This Wednesday was a relatively quiet morning at work, so I spent most of my time drafting some more blog posts in advance so they’re ready to go during busier times in the coming months. During my lunch break, I met with Bernard, the awesome Assistant Director of Residential Operations, to get some information on a maintenance project I’m working on for my Greek house. Then, it was back to McNutt Hall, where I updated some logistics for our tour guide program and did even more blog drafting! For students affiliated in Greek Life, Wednesday nights are meetings nights; execs make their announcements, but the main purpose of meetings is to get together with your peers and have fun! My favorite weekly meetings tradition at my house is the reading of our weekly anonymous compliment box that’s open throughout the week—it’s a great way to give people a shoutout for the things they’re doing well and brighten their day at the same time. After our meeting officially concluded, I spent some more time in the living room catching up with friends. We talked late into the night, long past when I should've gone to bed, which is how you know the conversation is good!

Thursday
Funnily enough, the highlight of my Thursday was the additional admissions work I got to do outside of the regular workday—alongside several other Dartmouth Admissions student employees, I participated in filming for an upcoming video project all around campus. I got to catch up with some of the other student tour guides while filming, and of course, it’s always fun to be on camera! After filming wrapped up, I headed home to Cookie and Milks, Alpha Theta's friendly parody event of Milk and Cookies, the biggest termly event held by our next-door neighbors, Phi Tau. We enjoyed slices of one huge chocolate chip cookie (baked by my friend Gabe; photo credit to him as well!) alongside an array of milks: whole milk, vanilla soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, chocolate milk, and even homemade horchata!

Friday
This Friday was a fun day at work: the Dartmouth Bound attendees in summer 2022 each wrote themselves a note to their future selves, and now some of them are at Dartmouth as 27s! I had the privilege of hand-delivering those postcards to their campus mailboxes—seeing their excitement from a year ago in the letters and knowing they’re here now was such a thrill. The afternoon held a very sunny and lively campus tour. I got to talk to a student interested in linguistics, which is always a plus, especially given that it's a relatively niche field. The evening—the final Friday of the term before finals for my friends taking classes—was a chill night in with friends and good conversation!

Saturday
On Saturday, I found myself on an excursion to Home Depot in West Lebanon to get supplies for yet another house project (on the house budget, of course)! We stopped at the dollar store on the way for a couple of things my friend needed, but I decided to adopt a stuffed crocodile (the only photo I remembered to take on Saturday, oddly) on a whim—we'd seen him the past few times there and still found ourselves amused by his silly look, so my friend encouraged me to make the investment. I am still seeking name suggestions! In any case, that evening, a group of friends and I had reservations at Tacos y Tequila, one of my favorite restaurants in Hanover. Their Burrito San Jose is my go-to, and I stuck with that this time, but I’ve never had something there I didn’t enjoy, and of course, I enjoyed the company even more! I've really appreciated the time I've had in Hanover without taking classes, and while I've still kept busy with work and activities, I'm so glad that I've had the chance to live "real life" up here :).
