How to get to Hanover, New Hampshire
It's humorous that "how to get to Hanover, NH?" can seem to be a more mystical question than "how to get into Dartmouth?" What's even funnier is that until two weeks before my first fall, I didn't know how to answer the first question! So, I figured that I'd write a blog post on how easy it is to get to Dartmouth. Read on if you're an incoming/prospective '28 or a parent!
The Dartmouth Coach is a bus company that shuttles students to and from campus. There are three primary pickup stops to get to Hanover: one in New York City and the other two in Boston.
Boston:
When you're travelling to Dartmouth from Boston, you can come via the Dartmouth Coach. There are two conveniently located pickup spots in Boston—one is in Boston Logan International Airport, for students who've just flown in, and the other one is in Boston South Station. South Station is actually a great place to have a pickup/dropoff spot because it's centrally located and not too far from anything.
The buses run from Boston Logan to Boston South all the way to Dartmouth (and the other way around, too!) They run about 6-7 times a day, both ways, though during the first and finals week, there are usually more buses owing to an increased demand. They cost $35 one way and are super comfortable! Pro-tip: make sure to coordinate with friends/people you might know if you're planning on coming up alone for the first time. It's nice to have someone with you through it!
The average time is about 2.5 hours, though that can change depending on traffic. In my experience, it's never taken longer than that, and these buses truly run like clockwork—trust me, I've missed enough of them to tell you :)
New York City:
To connect from New York, you can also take the Dartmouth Coach. However, unlike its Boston variant, the NYC Coach only has one pickup spot, which is 150 E 42nd St, close to Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan. There's usually only one bus a day (be sure to check their website!) from New York to Dartmouth, which leaves at around 11:00 AM from the city and reaches Dartmouth at 5:30 PM. There's also a coach that leaves Hanover at 6 AM and reaches NYC at around 11:30 AM.
The New York Coach, owing to its longer duration, serves food and drinks, and there's often movies playing onboard. Most students just use the 5-6 hours to catch up on work or sleep. The benefit is that you're travelling through a lot of New England, so the ride is absolutely beautiful and you surely won't get bored.
