My First Dartmouth vs. Princeton Hockey Game!
Dartmouth is known for its traditions and its sports! This weekend was a showcase of both during the iconic Dartmouth vs. Princeton men's ice hockey game.
In 1998, a Princeton student threw a tennis ball at the Dartmouth goalie. In response, Dartmouth students banded together and threw hundreds of tennis balls on the rink the next time the two teams faced off against one another. Since then, it's been a tradition for Dartmouth students to throw tennis balls after the home game's first goal against Princeton. This weekend was my first time experiencing this tradition, and it was so much fun!

In the week leading up to the game, clubs sold tennis balls and shirts to students to raise money for the organizations and for charity. My floormate bought a bunch of tennis balls and gave them out to everyone on the floor, which was so kind!
On the day of, I made the trek from French Hall to Thompson Arena, where the hockey teams play. Doors opened at 5:30 pm, and I made sure to get there so I could save seats for my friends. I grabbed seats off to the side of the net in the student section. The seats were perfect! We had a perfect sight of the game and a perfect vantage point to throw the tennis balls. The game started at 7 pm, and the stadium was packed. Apparently it was the 6th largest crowd in Thompson Arena history!

Finally, the teams skated out on the ice, and the game started. It was intense! Dartmouth and Princeton have a long-standing rivalry, and this game did not disappoint!
Within a few minutes, Dartmouth scored and the crowd erupted. Tennis balls were thrown on the ice from every direction. The ice was covered with tennis balls within seconds! The energy was amazing! Everyone was so excited to experience the tradition, many students for the first time!

The Dartmouth hockey team went on the ice to clean up the tennis balls. All the tennis balls went to animal shelters so the animals could play with them!
The rest of the game was so much fun! The student section cheered and shouted for the whole game. In the end, Dartmouth came short of winning, but the game was still so much fun. Traditions at Dartmouth are so exciting, and it is so amazing to be a part of them!
