How I Fulfilled my Graduation Requirements
Dartmouth has a series of Distributive Requirements that students fulfill in order to graduate. This includes about 10 classes in several different categories. Here is the official requirements:
The World Culture Requirements can be classes also used for the Distributive Requirements. For example, I took "Federal Indian Law", which fulfilled both the Social Analysis requirement as well as the Non-Western Cultures requirement.
Through my major, Classical Studies, I was able to fulfill several of the requirements. I took an Art History with a Classical focus that fulfilled the Art requirement as well as a Roman and Greek Engineering course that fulfilled the Technology or Applied Science requirement. Overall, I fulfilled half of my Distributive Requirements with my major!
I see the Distributive Requirements as a fantastic way to explore all the courses that Dartmouth has to offer. One of my friends took a Sociology course her first fall in order to fulfill the Social Analysis course and ended up loving it so much that she majored in Sociology!
For my remaining 5 classes for my Distributive Requirements, I took classes in several different departments in order to really understand the liberal arts experience. For example, I took an English course, "Horrors of Survival" in order to fulfill the requirement. This class taught me how to be a better reader and writer, and I had the chance to read several books on the Green during the lovely summer term.
Overall, I appreciate the Distributive Requirements and see them as something we as students have the opportunity to do, not something that "must" be done.
