How easy is it to travel to and from Hanover, especially for students who want to visit home or explore other cities during breaks?

A: Adrian Chimboza '25

One of the considerations that prospective Dartmouth students may have is the accessibility and convenience of traveling to and from Hanover, particularly when it comes to visiting home or exploring other cities during breaks. While Hanover is located in a relatively rural area, there are several transportation options available that make traveling relatively straightforward.

1) By Air:
For students who prefer air travel, the nearest major airport to Hanover is Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT), located in Manchester, New Hampshire, approximately an hour and a half away by car. MHT offers a range of domestic and some international flights, making it a convenient option for students to fly in and out of. The airport provides connections to major cities across the United States, allowing for easy access to various destinations. Additionally, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is another popular choice for students, as it offers a wider selection of flights and is approximately two hours away from Hanover. BOS is one of the busiest airports in the country, serving numerous domestic and international destinations, which provides students with additional flight options and flexibility when planning their travels.

2) Transportation Services:
Dartmouth College recognizes the importance of transportation for its students and provides transportation services to assist them in their travel needs. The Dartmouth Coach is a reliable and convenient bus service that operates between Hanover and various destinations. With multiple daily departures, this service offers comfortable and affordable transportation options. The Coach connects Hanover to major cities such as Boston, New York City, and other locations in the Northeast. The bus is equipped with amenities such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, and ensuring a comfortable journey for students. The service is particularly popular during breaks when students may want to travel home or explore nearby cities.

3) Ridesharing and Car Rentals:
Ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft are available in Hanover, providing students with convenient and flexible transportation options within the town and the surrounding areas. With just a few taps on their smartphones, students can request a ride and reach their desired destination. Ridesharing services are especially useful for shorter trips, such as traveling to nearby restaurants, shopping centers, or airports. Additionally, car rental services are available in the area, offering students the flexibility to explore other cities or visit home at their convenience. Renting a car can be a viable option for groups of students looking to travel together or for those who prefer the independence and freedom of having their own vehicle.

4) Public Transportation:
Hanover benefits from an efficient public transportation system. The Advance Transit bus service is a reliable option for students looking to travel within the Upper Valley region. This free bus service connects Hanover with neighboring towns and communities, providing students with convenient transportation options. The Advance Transit buses operate on fixed routes and schedules, making it easy for students to plan their trips. Whether it's visiting nearby towns, exploring local attractions, or simply commuting within the area, the public transportation system offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly means of getting around.

5) Road Networks:
Hanover is well-connected by road networks, making it easily accessible by car. Major highways such as Interstate 89 and Interstate 91 are within close proximity to the town. Interstate 89 connects Hanover to cities such as Burlington, Vermont, and Concord, New Hampshire, while Interstate 91 provides a direct route to destinations in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. These highways offer smooth travel and efficient connections, allowing students to drive to and from Hanover with relative ease. The accessibility provided by the road networks makes it convenient for students to plan road trips, visit nearby cities and towns, or even travel home during breaks.
