A Peek into Sophomore Fall!
Heading into Week 4 of the term, I thought it would be a good time to catch you all up on my Sophomore fall. I'm taking this term off-campus, but that doesn't mean that I won't be connected to Dartmouth resources, scenery, and—most importantly—people. Let me walk you through what I'll be doing this term!
Starting off with classes, I'm taking a psychology course on face perception, a microeconomics course, and a Middle Eastern studies course on modern Iraq. Before Dartmouth, I was heavily involved with psychology research and was very interested in human development. Although I've since chosen to major in Economics and Computer Science, the liberal arts curriculum means I'll still be able to take psychology courses I'm interested in. So far in my psychology class, we've discussed the different proposed explanations for how we perceive faces, in addition to how our face perception abilities develop over time. It's great to be able to study something I don't plan on majoring in, but am still very interested in.
My other courses have also been a lot of fun so far. Having never studied the Middle East before, my class on modern Iraq has introduced me to a lot of cool historical figures and events. We even went on a virtual tour to the Louvre, where I looked at the Code of Hammurabi. I have a lot of friends in that class, so it's great to be able to stay connected over what we're learning every day. My microeconomics class, which is a required course for the major, has introduced me to a lot of the fundamental concepts of economics. It's been really cool going over concepts on demand or pricing and seeing my real-life experiences parallel what is being taught. It's only been three weeks, but I feel like I've learned so many equations and laws already!
Outside of class, I'm hoping to take advantage of the remote nature by getting involved in different clubs around campus. Although it can be hard to go from meeting to meeting when you're at Hanover, it's been much easier to jump from Zoom meeting to Zoom meeting. Although I'm not sure which clubs I'll be joining yet, I've had a lot of fun discovering all that Dartmouth has to offer. Stay tuned — I'll definitely write more about my clubs in the future!
As you can see, although I am away from Hanover, I'm still involved with the people and opportunities of the college. I even get to see campus and the surrounding foliage every day, as my Instagram has regularly featured posts of Dartmouth from my classmates and friends. Although I can't wait to go back, being remote has been an interesting change of pace and has allowed me to explore new opportunities. I'm excited to see how this term goes, and as always, I'll keep the blog updated.
