Outside Resources

Outside resources are awards from non-Dartmouth sources.

Outside resources received for educational expenses, including any made payable to the student, must be reported to the financial aid office. These can include, but are not limited to: outside scholarships, awards, and grants; tuition benefits from an employer; VA benefits; and ROTC scholarships.

Our policy allows for outside resources to reduce or replace a student's leave-term earnings expectation, their employment expectation, and any optional loan in the award offer. An optional loan is added to help cover insurance costs not already covered by Dartmouth, as well as the allowable cost of a computer in a student's first year. Outside resources that exceed these amounts will reduce Dartmouth Scholarship dollar-for-dollar. They cannot be applied to reduce the calculated Parent Contribution by Dartmouth.

Incoming first-year students will have the opportunity to report their outside scholarships to the Financial Aid Office on a survey sent in June. If any outside resources not reported at the time of survey completion are learned of, students should contact us with an update. Resources reported on the CSS Profile should be reported on the survey in June as well.
