What is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC)?

General Financial Aid

We expect you and your parents to contribute to your educational costs at a level that is realistic.

To determine your eligibility for federal aid funds, we rely on the EFC generated using the Federal Methodology via your FAFSA.  To evaluate your need for Dartmouth scholarship funding, we also consider additional information obtained via the CSS Profile to determine a fair family contribution.  Your total Family Contribution will be subtracted from Dartmouth's Cost of Attendance to determine the amount of your financial aid award.

Students from families with total annual income below $65,000 who possess typical assets for this income range, will not have an expected parent contribution toward educational costs. Students will still be expected to contribute toward their own expenses from their summer income, part-time work during the school year, and their own savings. Your award will not include a student loan.
