How do Dartmouth Students Spend Their Freshman Summer? (Part 1)
As the first summer after freshman year at Dartmouth approaches, students are presented with a plethora of opportunities to enrich their educational and professional experiences. Whether through structured programs or individual pursuits, each student finds a way to make the most of these months. Dartmouth offers a diverse range of internships that cater to varying interests—from social change initiatives to global health projects—ensuring that every student can engage deeply in meaningful work even during the break.
Dartmouth Center for Social Impact offers the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS), which provides cohort internship opportunities in Boston, San Francisco, Cape Town, and Philadelphia. Here, students engage with local nonprofits dedicated to addressing critical social issues such as housing insecurity, immigration, and human rights violations through innovative problem-solving approaches.
For those inclined towards global health and the pre-health track, the Dickey Center for International Understanding steps in to offer unique internships at global health nonprofits. An exemplar of this is the opportunity at the Institute of Population, Health, and Development (PHAD) in Hanoi, Vietnam, which provides hands-on experience in international health initiatives.
For students looking for different experiences or who need a more flexible summer schedule, Dartmouth fully supports the pursuit of independent internships. Many students, including myself, opt to head home for some well-deserved downtime. Engaging in local or remote internships allows us to continue our professional growth while also enjoying the time to reconnect with friends and family.
