Advice for City Kids: How to Thrive in Wintery Hanover
Students at Dartmouth come from all over the country and world. We come to Dartmouth from perpetually warm climates, snowy regions, big cities, rural towns, suburbs, and everything in between! But, regardless of our backgrounds, we all get to live in the same beautiful place for four years.
Dartmouth is located in Hanover, New Hampshire. This small town cycles through all of the different climates. When I first arrived here last term in September, it was t-shirt and shorts weather! I made sure to bring fans with me to keep my dorm room cool.
I'm from New York City, so I'm used to different types of weather. Yet, until this term, I had never really lived through Winter outside of a city. I'm writing this blog post in the middle of January, so it's pretty chilly outside. To survive and thrive in the snow and cold, you must have the right gear. But, before you go stressing about how much you need to buy, let me share my tips and tricks with you!
First, the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC), the oldest and largest collegiate outing club in the country, can lend you pretty much everything I'm about to list. So, while my list is a recommendation of cold weather gear to buy, Dartmouth wants to make sure cost is not prohibitive for anyone. The DOC works to make sure staying warm and exploring the outdoors is as equitable and sustainable as possible.
Without further ado, here is a list of Things you Need for a Dartmouth Winter!
Things You Need for a Dartmouth Winter
General tips:
- keep your head and ears covered.
- make sure to layer up.
- Do fun things in the snow and cold by signing up for DOC-led hikes and such!
Outerwear:
- A good, warm coat is so important
- Warm sweaters/sweatshirts to wear around campus and in your classrooms
- A warm hat
- A warm scarf
- Warm socks
- A pair of snow boots
- Snowpants
- Leggings to go under your snow pants
- Some warm mittens or waterproof gloves
Ski Gear:
(this is not necessary, but if you plan on skiing at the Dartmouth Skiway, a Dartmouth owned and operated ski mountain near campus, it is a good idea to bring ski gear!)
Equipment:
- I brought skis, ski boots, poles, goggles, and a helmet to go skiing on the Skiway (check out my blog post about the Skiway!)
- My friends are taking free beginner lessons at the Skiway, and they received free skis, ski boots, poles, and helmets for the Winter Term.
Other Apparel and Layers:
- Base layers: leggings and a non-cotton shirt
- Neck gaiter
- Water-proof gloves
- Tall, wool socks
The DOC will also lend you all the snowy winter adventure gear gear you need for free! This includes:
- Snowshoes
- Spikes
- Ice skates
- Cross country skis
- Warm coats
- Layers (think puffy jackets and outershells)
- Mittens and gloves
- Hiking backpacks
- Hiking poles
- Sleds
- I could go on forever, but for your sake and mine, I'll leave the rest of the gear we lend up to your imagination!
