Los Angeles!

I get a lot of messages and Instagram DMs from prospective students who are applying to be film or psychology majors at Dartmouth, because a lot of my posts incorporate the experiences of those majors as a student here. But I'm really excited to tell you that I'm going to be spending my winter term away from Dartmouth and in …

Los Angeles!

I'm going on the Film & Media Studies Domestic Study Programme (DSP for short) in Los Angeles, where I'll be studying and working within the film industry to gain firsthand experience as well as learn a little bit more about this world that I love so much.

I'll be blogging throughout my experience because, as I've said numerous times before, the best thing about Dartmouth's D-Plan (our modified quarter system) is that it allows students to study away from campus really easily and enables experiences like this that wouldn't be possible at other schools around the country.

I'll let you know more about where I'm working and where I'm staying when I get there, but as for now, I'm going to answer some questions I've been getting the past few weeks about the film major.

Q: Is the film major at Dartmouth good?

A: Yes! While Dartmouth isn't traditionally considered a 'film school,' it definitely allows you to dip your feet into a wide array of interdisciplinary topics related to film. I've learnt about films from around the world, techniques of film direction and scriptwriting, and am excited to take classes on sound and cinematography!

Q: Does Dartmouth enable you to have experiences related to film?

A: Definitely! Look at what I'm getting to do in the winter. I'm super excited to live in a place like L.A., but to be able to navigate that city with Dartmouth having my back makes it so much easier and more comfortable.

Q: Do people shoot short films at Dartmouth?

A: Lots and lots! And there's a lot of available grants that you can apply for to get funding for your film and the vision you have :) Also, an added bonus is the fact that because we're a smaller school, there's a more insular community of filmmakers who are all willing to help out on your films and make them even better.

That's all for me. I'm going to be signing off until the new year. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas — see you on the flip side (Los Angeles)!

Kabir :)
