The Beauty of a Liberal Arts Education
Dartmouth requires all of their students to adhere to a liberal arts curriculum. We must take classes across a wide variety of distributives (such as a literature course, an art course, and a lab course). Another incredible thing about such an education is that we do not have to declare our major until our sophomore winter! We have a year and a half of taking courses to see what we are interested in, which is something that makes Dartmouth stand out.
Now, by taking classes in all of these disciplines, it is likely that your academic interests will change. Let me tell you about how the liberal arts education has impacted my interests and how they have already changed in just two terms!
Coming into Dartmouth, I was pretty confident that I was going to double major in Quantitative Social Science and Government. I had a keen interest in the government structure and process, so such a combination of studies seemed perfect for me. However, in the fall, I took Introductory Linguistics mainly to fulfill the QDS requirement through something that I have never learned before. Little did I know just how impactful such a course would be for my studies. I absolutely adored this class, and it opened me up to the fields of linguistics and cognitive science. So now, I am planning on double majoring in QSS and Cognitive Science! The liberal arts education has allowed me to explore classes that I would not be able to take without such education, and it has had such a substantial impact on me.
In addition, I am taking Environment and Society right now, and such a course has opened me up to a minor in International Studies! We have learned all about the economy, government, and environment and viewed it in an international context, which has been amazing. Again, something that I could never have imagined studying has now become a major possibility, all because of the liberal arts education that Dartmouth has to offer.
It is undeniably clear that the liberal arts at Dartmouth allows students so much flexibility with their studies. By taking courses in all different disciplines, everyone can explore and even change their fields of interests!
