The Tucker Center
Do you consider yourself religious? If you answered yes or no to that question, the Tucker Center is for you! The center's mission statement is "The William Jewett Tucker Center inspires and supports members of the Dartmouth community to cultivate a deep sense of meaning and purpose through spiritual, ethical, and moral exploration and engagement,"; regardless of your religious background.
The Tucker Center hosts multiple events every term, ranging from interfaith dinners every Tuesday night (with free Thai food!), a Monastic visit, and a special Baccalaureate service for graduation every year.
The Tucker Center is an overarching office with many different sub-groups, including the Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center, Vox Christian Fellowship (a Christian organization), a Buddhist organization, and a Muslim student group, among many others. While each group has its own meetings and spaces, the Tucker Center serves as a nice catalyst for interfaith conversations and unity.
It doesn't hurt that the staff at the Tucker Center are absolutely wonderful. Reverend Nancy Vogele '85 runs the Tucker Center and as a Dartmouth alumna, she knows the school really well. I've been fortunate enough to have several conversations with her, both about our shared faith and about life in general, and she is there to talk to anyone!
The Tucker Center also has several student employment opportunities. They run a program called the Tucker Center Fellows, which is a yearlong work program where fellows get to explore their faith through different events and get paid! The Tucker Center also offers two internships: a summer faith-based non-profit internship and a Christian-based non-profit internship (CROSS), which can occur in any term. I've been lucky enough to do the CROSS internship, and with the funding from Dartmouth, I was able to work at a Christian homeless shelter in Marietta, GA.
Overall, I highly recommend you check out the Tucker Center (located at 6154 South Fairbanks Hall, Hanover, NH 03755) if you visit Dartmouth. Stop in, say hello, and you will find just another reason I love my school!
