Shattuck Observatory in the nighttime

Dartmouth has an incredible observatory right on campus!

This past spring, I had the opportunity to visit the Shattuck Observatory, which is located a mere five minutes from the Green. Almost every term, the Physics and Astronomy Club hosts a viewing of the Shattuck Observatory, specifically the North Telescope, along with homemade nitrogen ice cream!

Membership in the Physics and Astronomy Club is open to anyone, regardless of your major or academic background. Additionally, all Shattuck Observatory events are open to all Dartmouth students, regardless of club affiliation. To me, this shows the inclusiveness of Dartmouth clubs and even academic departments. You can join almost any club without any prior experience, and you can take classes in all departments with no pressure to major or minor in that field.

Through the North Telescope, you can see thousands of stars, and the telescope is often trained on a specific planet on a star, so you can see it with incredible precision. Because of Dartmouth's relatively rural location, there is virtually no light pollution, meaning you can clearly see the night sky.

At the event itself, I saw many familiar and unfamiliar faces. While I feel like I know most people in my class year, I don't know everyone in other years, so events like these are a nice chance to meet new people and see where their academic interests lie. Over nitrogen ice cream (which is actually really good!), I was able to talk with new people and see what brought them to explore the observatory.

Dartmouth's Astronomy classes use the observatory extensively. In fact, during summer terms, astronomy classes are very popular because people want to be outside and explore not only the observatory but also the night sky. Dartmouth has both a Physics major/minor and an Astronomy major/minor

Overall, I thought that the night once again reaffirmed my choice of Dartmouth. Given our rural location, seeing the stars was an easy thing to do. With our tight-knit student body, I was able to explore a new hobby, all while meeting new people and seeing old friends. Don't let our New Hampshire location make you think we are isolated; in fact, it is just the opposite.
