Exploring the World with Dartmouth
Though physically located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth is truly a global institution. Study abroad is not only an option, but it is encouraged for students to do multiple terms of. Through my Dartmouth-funded off term and transfer term, Dartmouth has allowed me to truly explore the world.
Last spring, I did a fully funded Dartmouth Global Health Internship in Hanoi, Vietnam through the Dickey Center for International Understanding. The internship covered all my travel costs, meals, and housing for the duration of the internship.
Because of a visa rule in Vietnam related to COVID-19, the other Dartmouth intern and I had to leave the country earlier than expected. With this setback, Dickey provided us more funding in order to travel around Southeast Asia in order to truly get a global perspective on health. During that time, we traveled to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan. In these countries, we were able to see different health systems in action.
Dartmouth's location also allows students easy access to Canada. If I wanted to travel to Canada from my home in Georgia, it would take 20 hours! However, Montreal is an easy 3 hour drive from Dartmouth. My dad and I did a weekend trip to Montreal this summer and enjoyed a big city experience in close proximity to rural New Hampshire.
I am doing a transfer term this fall in Ireland, meaning I am taking classes at a host university, and my classes will transfer back to Dartmouth. During the weekends and breaks in school, I have traveled to several different countries with the accessibility of flights within Europe.
Overall, I see Dartmouth as a launching pad for the world, and students are encouraged to experience different countries and always come home to the Big Green.
