People running through the finish line of a running race.

A big part of the Upper Valley community is the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). It's an important education and research site for the undergraduate and graduate students of Dartmouth and it offers high-quality healthcare to patients.

To ensure DHMC and the pediatric hospital, Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), are able to operate to their fullest capacity and support families, organizers raise money through the CHaD HERO, an annual race.

For 20 years, the CHaD HERO has been a community day of running events ranging from a fun one mile run to a half marathon. Finishers receive medals and bragging rights, but more importantly, the money raised from the event goes back to the children's hospital.

Students normally get involved in the CHaD HERO and run it with their friends or club groups. This year, I knew a few people running it and I wanted to cheer them on while they did!

My floormates and I knew we wanted to cheer on the runners the moment our friend, Molly, told us she was planning on running the half-marathon. To help cheer her on, a couple days before the race we made posters in Collis to hold while cheering. On the posters, we wrote encouraging words and inside jokes in bright colors so she'd see them as she ran by.

The day of the race we woke up early to figure out the perfect place to stand and cheer our friends on. After walking past the library, we found our spot at an intersection near Occom Pond, which was directly on the race route.

On the other side of the street were some musicians playing music, which was really nice to listen to while we waited for the runners to pass through.

In the beginning, all the runners start and run together until they split up to run their respective distances. Since we were stationed so early on the route, we saw all the runners, no matter if they were running the 5k or half marathon.

This was a perfect way to cheer on all my friends as they ran past! We also cheered on all the other students, kids, and community members.

After we saw our friends, we packed up our spot and ate breakfast at the dining hall. We knew a rough estimate of when Molly would be finishing her half-marathon and made sure to get to the finish line before she did to cheer her on.

The finish line was so electric! All the cheering and joy from the runners and supporters was amazing! We cheered for Molly as she ran across the finish line and met up with her afterwards to congratulate her.

It was such a special day spent supporting my friends, but more importantly supporting the CHaD and raising money for a good cause!
