Donald Claflin Jewelry Studio
When I first came to Dartmouth, I thought that the arts facilities and classes were only reserved for people with true artistic talent (unlike myself); however, that is quite the opposite of the truth! Dartmouth has five majors and minors in the arts: Music, Art History, Studio Art, Theatre, and Film and Media Studies. Because Dartmouth has a liberal arts curriculum, students can take classes in the arts regardless of their talent or major/minor and engage with the arts even if they are not enrolled in art classes. This means that those five arts departments have world-class facilities that are open to all Dartmouth students to use!
My favorite sector of Dartmouth Arts is the Jewelry Studio. Every day, the studio has drop-in hours where students can work on any project of their choosing. The studio is staffed by two full-time employees as well as many Dartmouth student employees. The studio employees are there to assist students with their projects, so if you want to make a ring with your initials on it but have no clue how to, the studio employees will guide you through the entire process.
I was in the studio a lot this past spring term because I was making an exact replica of a Roman scalpel for the final project in my Greek and Roman Engineering and Technology class (CLST 12.02).
A bonus of the studio is that it is completely free! All that students pay for is the materials, which typically cost about $5. This means that a fun afternoon in the studio would only cost you $5!
The studio will often host free workshops where they will guide you through making a specific type of jewelry, and in that case, all the materials are free!
The Jewelry Studio is in the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and after the Hopkins Center renovation is complete in 2025, it will be completely reimagined with many new bells and whistles!
Overall, the Jewelry Studio is a great example of the many different unique spaces on campus. With Dartmouth's location in a rural location, there are so many different centers on campus to keep you endlessly entertained, regardless of your experience!
