How Dartmouth Students Spend Their Winterim? Part 1: EMT Course
My friend NaamOon, a Dartmouth sophomore pursuing the premed track, spent three weeks over the winterim taking the Accelerated EMT course. In this blog, I interviewed her regarding her experience taking this course over winterm.
What is the EMT course about, and what motivated you to participate?
"The Winterim Accelerated EMT Course, offered by Dartmouth EMS, provides an intensive introduction to emergency medical services over a condensed timeline. It runs from Monday to Thursday, with classes from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. I was motivated to participate because I'm a sophomore on the premed track, and I wanted to gain practical skills and knowledge in emergency medicine. The intensive nature of the course promised to give me a comprehensive overview in just three weeks, which I found really appealing."
How was the course structured, and what did a typical day look like?
"The course included a mix of lectures, practical skills training, and even guest speakers. There were about 55 participants, so we were typically divided into 2-3 groups. Each day, we engaged with online modules and hands-on training simultaneously. A typical day involved attending lectures that covered crucial topics in EMS, followed by practical sessions where we learned how to use different equipment. We also had the opportunity to hear from local guest speakers, such as Doug Hackett, Hanover's Director of Communications, which added valuable insights to our learning experience."
What did you like most about this experience?
"Given that this course condenses content typically taught over 3-4 months into just 11 days, the workload was intense. We were often tasked with several hours of study beyond full-day classes, including evenings and weekends. However, the reward for that investment was substantial. I came away feeling enriched by the comprehensive curriculum, and I particularly enjoyed learning about EMS logistics, mastering new skills, and familiarizing myself with various equipment.
Beyond the academic benefits, the course also fostered an excellent environment for building camaraderie. I had the chance to connect with classmates and forge new friendships, enhancing my overall experience. In conclusion, the Winterim Accelerated EMT Course was an invaluable opportunity—both for my personal growth and for my interest in pursuing a future in emergency medical services. I'm grateful I took this leap, and I look forward to applying what I've learned in real-world scenarios."
