Winterim? What's that?
Winterim is a six-week period that begins right before Thanksgiving and ends at the start of January. Why is it called "Winterim"? Well, it's an interim period during the winter—hence, Winterim. It's a unique opportunity that allows students to take time off earlier and provides ample time to pursue activities and opportunities that wouldn't otherwise be possible during a typical term at Dartmouth.
For my Winterim, I spent six weeks at home, focusing on family and passion projects that I usually have less time for. For me, this included a lot of design work for my footwear startup (you can read about its origins [here]), creating art (curious about drawing at Dartmouth?), reading books of interest, and training for an upcoming race with the Club Triathlon Team. The team organizes a training trip over spring break, and this year we'll also compete at collegiate club nationals in Miami, Florida! Additionally, I used the time to plan my courses and start applications for both a foreign study program and the Tuck Business Bridge Program for this coming spring.
Overall, I felt the benefits of Winterim as I struck a balance between recharging and being productive—but most importantly, I aimed to be present with family and friends. Being at Dartmouth often means some of my relationships fall by the wayside, and this time off gave me the chance to reconnect and catch up.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the break and the chance to focus on areas that might be neglected during the school term. However, I also found myself ready to return. The fast-paced nature of Dartmouth's 10-week terms makes time away from campus feel slow and, at times, mundane. The stark contrast between life at and outside of Dartmouth can feel like a roller coaster. Even after six weeks at home, it almost feels like I never left once I step back on campus.
Dartmouth itself doesn't seem to change, but what does change are the people and the stories they bring back. One of my friends went on a backpacking trip to Texas through the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC); another began their research journey with a professor in the Biology department. Others spent time traveling or developing their passions, while some stayed on campus.
What I've realized is that everyone's Winterim is different, offering a unique and independent opportunity to enrich their Dartmouth experience. Ultimately, what matters is how you choose to spend it
