Sunset on the beach - logically this is probably a Seattle beach

A young white woman smiles with a fried dumpling in her hand. She is sitting in a restaurant. There is a tray of food in front of her which includes soup, fried dumplings, and soup dumplings.

Hello and welcome to the first installment of JRR: Julia's Restaurant Reviews! Each post, I will review a new restaurant around the Upper Valley. I'm going to start with a spot in West Lebanon: Happy Dumpling.

During winter term (25W, as we call it), my best friend Addy (pictured) and I were both on campus a few days before classes started. In an attempt to find any Asian restaurants that could compare to our food scenes at home in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA, I started Googling with my extra downtime. I was quickly led to Happy Dumpling, a small restaurant in West Lebanon (about a 10 minute drive from campus). I told Addy about my newly discovered spot and soon we were driving over in my car.

Now, this spring, we decided to continue our streak at Happy Dumpling (if there's one thing to know about Dartmouth students, we love our traditions!). On the day before classes started, we went back to the West Lebanon restaurant. Here's our review of everything we ordered:

Pork Fried Dumplings - 10/10
These dumplings were incredible. Addy and I both agree that they were the best item on the menu. They were crunchy, warm, and perfectly flavored (especially with the included vinegar-y dipping sauce).

Spicy Pork Dan Dan Noodle Soup - 8/10
This soup was SO yummy. Really delicious (and spicy) broth, and the noodles had a great texture. However, I did not love the pork in this one. Beware: this soup is on the hot side! It was a bit too spicy for Addy (in her words).

Pork Soup Dumplings - 2/10
While these were really delicious during our visit in the winter, it seems like something was a bit off this time. However, I think I'll give them another try: soup dumplings are truly one of my favorite foods back in Seattle.

While Happy Dumpling did not have food of exactly the same quality as restaurants in Seattle, I would still recommend it to all Dartmouth students missing East Asian food they can get at home. 11/10 on effort, without a doubt.
