My Adventures in DC!
This summer, I'm living and working in Washington, D.C. as a First-Year Fellow. Besides the amazing work opportunities, D.C. also offers so many fun and affordable summer experiences. When we're not working at our internships, my friends and I are out exploring the city and taking advantage of all the fun activities in town.
Our first weekend here, there was a BBQ Festival down Pennsylvania Avenue, the same street the White House is on. Vendors were handing out free samples, and there were food-eating contests the whole day. We grabbed so many snacks and stocked our pantries.
That same day, we walked to the Botanic Gardens and explored the pop-up farmer's market and all the plants. It was so beautiful!
At night, we went to some of the Smithsonian museums. For the summer solstice, the Smithsonian museums were open longer and hosted free events, like an indoor arcade and concert. We had so much fun exploring the art and artifacts and playing games.

It wouldn't be a D.C. summer without going to a Nationals baseball game. I had never been to a major league baseball game, so I had a lot of fun. Plus, tickets were cheap because the ballpark has discounted rates in the summer for special days.
Another D.C. summer staple is Jazz in the Garden. Every Friday, a jazz band plays in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art. The event is free, but getting tickets to it is extremely difficult because it is so popular. Luckily, my roommate is amazing and managed to get us all tickets. Jazz in the Garden was so much fun and a great way to unwind after a day at work!

My roommate also made it a point to visit all the Smithsonian Museums. While I didn't go with her to all of them, I did visit a lot of museums, including the National Gallery, the Women in the Arts Museum, and the Air and Space Museum. We also spent a lot of time at the zoo visiting Bao Li and Qing Bao, the pandas.
There is also so much to do and see around Capitol Hill. During breaks at work, I would take the tunnels to the Library of Congress and admire the beautiful architecture and books. I also visited the Supreme Court, which was so cool!
D.C. also hosted a tennis tournament this summer, so my friends and I got the cheapest tickets we could and spent the whole day watching tennis. We got to see Ben Shelton, which was so amazing!

One of my favorite nights was when we went to a comedy show for people who had just completed a comedy class. Essentially, it was a graduation showcase, and we had to be the only people there that weren't family or friends, but we had so much fun!
Just last Friday, we attended an outdoor movie night at the Kennedy Center. We watched Bend It Like Beckman and then walked down the river to the monuments. We visited the Lincoln Memorial and then made our way across the reflecting pool to the Washington Monument.
The best part is that most of these activities were free, which was very nice for a group of college students on a budget. I've had so much fun exploring the city and doing it with my First Year Fellow friends, and I can't wait to explore it some more! Stay tuned for a post on my experience working as a Hilltern!
