Watching the Polar Bear Swim
This weekend marked Dartmouth's 112th winter carnival, which is full of whimsical traditions that undergraduates and alumni alike look forward to every year. Every year has a theme, and this year's Pirate theme did not disappoint. Although winter carnival offers many events, my favorite has always been the Polar Bear Swim.
You may be familiar with the concept of a polar bear plunge, where you jump in icy waters and immediately get out. However, Dartmouth's Polar Bear Swim is truly a swim, albeit only 10 seconds, that tests even the true blooded New Englanders.
Every year, the college carves out a large block from Occom Pond, which is a short walk from campus. Dartmouth EMS and the Hanover Fire department were there to ensure the event was safe.
Coming from Georgia, the waters of Hanover are a bit too cold for my taste, so in order to participate in the Polar Bear Swim, I decided to volunteer for it!
This year, close to half of the student body decided to take the plunge, so the event was very busy. Participants lined up with warm layers, bravely traveled down to Occom Pond, got into bathing suits, and prepared for the plunge!
Before you bravely jump in, a rope is tied around your waist to ensure you swim across the path. Two people swim at a time, so you and a friend can make the journey together.
After people finished, they either sprinted to their rooms for a hot shower or to get free hot chocolate and to share their experiences with fellow plungers.
Overall, I had a great time helping out and watching my friends cross one more Dartmouth tradition off their bucket list.
