Dartmouth's 19th president, Sian Beilock, took office a little over a year and a half ago, and she recently embarked on a Presidential Welcome Tour, visiting cities all over the world, from San Francisco to Hong Kong, to talk with Dartmouth alumni.

The event started and ended with a reception for Dartmouth community members, including students, parents, and alumni. This was a great opportunity to meet people from all stages of life with connections to Dartmouth. Given Atlanta's 7 million population, it is nice to know a small cohort of people who have spent some time at the College on the Hill!

A member of the Board of Trustees, who said he met his wife on First-Year Trips, introduced Beilock to the audience. As a side note, there are some really cool people on the Board, including Constance W. Britton '89 (White Lotus star), Shonda Rhimes '91 (legendary creator of Grey's Anatomy and countless other TV shows ), Jacob Tapper '91 (CNN anchor and advisor to The Dartmouth)

During President Beilock's address to the audience (which had about 200 people), she discussed her five main initiatives, including "mental health, brave spaces, Dartmouth for life, action on climate, breakthrough innovation." She also explained how she used her background in psychology as the head of Dartmouth; her research focused on how people act under pressure, and she discussed a talk she had with 300 Dartmouth DI athletes about performing under pressure. She famously did a TedX talk talking about "Why we choke under pressure-and how to avoid it".

President Beilock took questions at the end of her talk, and one alumnus's question stood out in particular. A member of the class of 1964 explained to the audience that when he was at Dartmouth, he was taught Calculus by legendary Dartmouth President Kemeny, a floormate of Johannes von Trapp '63 (the son from The Sound of Music and the owner of a nearby ski lodge in Stowe), and listened to former Dartmouth professor Robert Frost read poetry on the weekends. As the oldest practicing oncologist in the nation, he said he had leaned on his undergraduate liberal arts education during his long career. He asked what Dartmouth's commitment to the undergraduate students was. Beilock answered and said in her eyes, Dartmouth is the best undergraduate institution in the nation.

Overall, I had a great time hearing more from Dartmouth's relatively new president and enjoyed meeting people who loved Dartmouth as much as I do!
