From Connection to Impact: My Leadership Journey at Dartmouth
As a second-year student at Dartmouth, I've found myself stepping into several leadership roles across campus. From working with the Caribbean Connection to supporting the First Generation Office, each position has taught me something unique about community, communication, and the impact of shared experiences. Here's a look at how each role has shaped my journey and the ways I'm striving to make a difference in my communities:
1. My role as Vice President of Dartmouth Caribbean Connections (DCC) allows me to help new and returning Caribbean students feel at home. Whether we're organizing events or just creating spaces for conversation, I've learned the power of cultural connection in a place far from home. Working with first-year students, especially, has shown me the importance of community support during the transition to college life. Planning events that resonate with students' cultural backgrounds has taught me how to foster inclusivity, and seeing students feel at ease and form friendships has been incredibly rewarding.
2. As the Social Media Manager for the Black Underground Theater Association (BUTA), I help elevate voices and stories through theater. Specifically, I design digital posters and promotional materials—like the recent Hamlet screening poster, to capture attention and convey BUTA's mission. Designing for a platform that both invites new audiences and represents BUTA's values has challenged me to think creatively about visuals and messaging. It's a role where I can express artistic ideas while also building visibility for performances that resonate deeply with students on campus.
3. My journey in the legal field is still unfolding, but my work with the Dartmouth Minority Pre-Law Association (DMPLA) has taught me there's no singular way to make an impact. Recently, I moderated a panel featuring first-generation Dartmouth alums who are now navigating the legal world. Hearing their stories and insights highlighted the importance of remaining open to different paths and adapting along the way. Through DMPLA, I hope to encourage other students to explore law without feeling pressured to have a fixed plan, focusing instead on the change they wish to inspire.
4. Last but not least, working with the First Generation Office (FGO) has allowed me to uplift and support first-generation, low-income students like myself. As the Digital Media Student Director, I manage digital content for FGO's platforms, including updating the website's events and resources. This role has taught me a lot about brand consistency and using media strategically to ensure students know about the support available to them. Collaborating with other Student Directors has deepened my understanding of teamwork and shared goals, as we work together to ensure our peers feel represented and supported.
Balancing these roles has enriched my Dartmouth experience, teaching me about leadership, community, and the diverse ways we can each make an impact. Whether through organizing events, creating media, or sharing stories, each role has given me insights into what it means to lead with purpose. As I look ahead, I'm excited to keep exploring new ways to grow, contribute, and help others find their own paths to impact.
