DOC Break Trips
Dartmouth offers students incredible opportunities during breaks through the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) trips. Options vary widely, from cozy cabin retreats with friends to adventurous climbing expeditions under starry skies.
Two weeks ago, I boarded a plane to Las Vegas to embark on a two-week adventure filled with hiking, climbing, and spontaneous hitchhiking. The journey unfolded in two parts: exploring Zion National Park and climbing in the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.
The first leg of our journey began spontaneously with just me and another Dartmouth international student. Without a concrete plan, we found ourselves in Springdale, a quaint town beside Zion National Park. Driven by adventure, we ambitiously decided to hike across the entire park in a single day. Unbeknownst to us, the northern part of Zion was blanketed in deep snow. What initially seemed unfortunate turned into an incredible stroke of luck. A forecasted snow storm led to mass cancellations, leaving us with an exceptional camping spot for which people wait for months and nearly exclusive access to the park—a truly unforgettable experience.
After a few days of spontaneous adventures and several hitchhiked rides, we reconnected with the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club (DMC) at the Las Vegas airport. Equipped with ropes, tents, helmets, and carabiners, we were ready to climb. What struck me the most was how the entire adventure was student-organized, for students from students, fostering an atmosphere of genuine care and camaraderie. At these moments, I realized how special some of the students at Dartmouth are. The small leader-to-participant ratio ensured each person felt supported and valued, a remarkable experience compared to everyday life. Trippees (the trip participants) ranged from total beginner climbers to people with years' worth of climbing experience. All this is to say that no matter your experience level, there is a spot for you on DOC trips.
Similarly, the expertise our student leaders shared was impressive. Despite being just a few years older, their climbing knowledge and enthusiasm were inspiring and generously passed on.
Financially, Dartmouth's aid program made this incredible adventure accessible to me. Thanks to a 70% subsidy, my seven-day climbing trip—including flights, food, and lodging—cost around $110. The other aspect that makes DOC break trips truly accessible is the fact that you don't need to own the gear you are to use; the Dartmouth Outing Club has everything you can think of, from highly technical climbing gear to hiking boots, all of which you can get access to free of charge.
Growing up, I constantly heard exciting stories of my parents' college adventures, always dreaming of having experiences just as thrilling. Whether it's breathtaking climbs or spontaneous snow adventures, Dartmouth's DOC trips have been among the most memorable experiences of my college life—exactly the adventures I'd dreamed of growing up
