Tuck Pathfinders!
I participated in Tuck Pathfinders in the winter term, an inaugural program from Tuck Undergraduate Education at Dartmouth. This program introduced first-year students to topics like personal finance, networking, and professional writing. It also connected students with Dartmouth alums, from whom we heard great career advice!
The program took place over four weeks. Every weekend, we attended seminars and discussions in Georgiopolous Classroom and Raether Atrium, both located in the Tuck Business School. This was super cool because undergraduate students don't normally get to learn in Tuck. It's also right next to French Hall, so I didn't have much of a commute on the weekends!
On the first day, we started with introductions and took the Clifton Strengths Assessment. This test figures out your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to jobs and careers. Having this information was a great way to start the program and get me thinking about my career post-college.
At the end of the first session, we also heard from Professor Charles Wheelan, a Dartmouth grad and the director of Tuck Pathfinders. He discussed life post-Dartmouth, told hilarious stories, and gave wonderful advice.
Professor Wheelan also taught part of the next session. He discussed professional communication, which I found incredibly helpful. He even gave us all a free copy of his book, which he inscribed to each of us!

Next, we learned about negotiating and the science of happiness, both of which were taught by Tuck professors. It was so cool to learn from Tuck professors during this program!
The next topic we tackled was personal finance, which I found to be really helpful and important information as a young adult.
On the last day, we learned how to design your life and connect with the Dartmouth alumni network. There are so many ways to connect with this network, including Dartmouth Connect and the Center for Professional Development.
The best part of the program was that we got to actually connect and hear from real Dartmouth alumni, including Shonda Rhimes. I am a big fan of her shows, and I admire her screenwriting skills. I was so excited to meet her!
All the alums were so kind and knowledgeable. Professor Wheelan would ask each alum what their first job was and what their current job was, and the range of answers was so cool! Hearing their stories was really comforting as a first-year. They all experienced ups and downs, but were resilient and grew from their experiences.
In addition to the lessons learned, we also received multiple free books to continue our education. All in all, the experience was really wonderful. I learned so much, and I feel more career-ready!
