ballots

The first day back on campus after winter break can be overwhelming. Not only do you have to prepare for school assignments and club events, but you also have to say goodbye to your family and childhood home for months. It can be challenging, especially when the distance means missing out on family traditions.

For my family, a tradition of ours is to throw award show watch parties. We print out ballots, predict who's going to win, and eat all kinds of snacks and sweets during the ceremony. It is so much fun!

The first award show of the season is the Golden Globes, but they premiered on my first day back at Dartmouth. This meant I couldn't watch it with my family. While this bummed me out, I didn't let it get me down.

I decided to continue the tradition instead and share it with my friends at Dartmouth! Most of my friends are equally obsessed with TV shows, movies, and celebrities, so it did not take any convincing for them to attend.

Next, I gathered the supplies. With the help of fellow blogger Reece, I printed out fifteen Golden Globes ballots, one for each of my friends. To make it more fun, I picked up a prize for the person who got the most predictions right.

The prize was an adorable popcorn PEZ dispenser and a plastic trophy. I also figured we would need snacks, so I picked up the best movie theater treats: candy and popcorn!

Six boxes of candy are displayed on a wooden shelf. The boxes say "Cookie Dough Bite," "Nerds Gummy Clusters," "Sour Patch Kids," "M&M's," "Raisinets," and "Milk Duds." In the middle of the boxes, a packaged PEZ dispenser, looking like a popcorn bucket, s

Finally, the actual watch party! The awards started at 8 pm, but I had everyone show up around 7:30 pm so we could fill out our ballots before the ceremony and watch the red carpet coverage.

While we are fairly well-versed in pop culture and movies, it was hard to predict the winner of each category. Most of us just put the name of the celebrity we liked the most or the movie that was our favorite. This made for a lot of really fun discussions and debates on who should win over who will win.

At 8 pm, the awards started! I was able to stream it through the CBS app on my Roku stick, which makes watching live events much easier in a dorm room.

A TV, resting on a wooden stand, displays live footage of a ballroom filled with circular tables, where countless people sit and talk. The screen says "Golden Globes" and the closed captions say "82nd Golden Globe Awards will continue".
Here's a screenshot of the Golden Globes!

For over three hours, we watched the Golden Globes, cheering when our faves won and being shocked when they didn't. We analyzed the fashion looks, discussed the celebrity couples, and ate so many sweets!

It was so much fun, and we will definitely be doing it again for the Grammys and Oscars later on in the term, making it a dorm tradition.

P.S. I won the trophy!!
