Dartmouth Center for Social Impact: Winterim ImpACT Internship
If you are interested in volunteering and making a difference in the local Upper Valley community surrounding Dartmouth, your hometown, or in a new city, the Dartmouth Center for Social Impact (DCSI) is the place for you! I have been involved with the center for my entire Dartmouth career, and I have loved all of my experiences, from volunteering as a SIBs mentor to the Global Impact at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge conference. That's why I was so excited about the DCSI's Winterim ImpACT internship!
Winterim is a unique Dartmouth experience; because we are on a quarter system, our fall term ends right before Thanksgiving and ends after New Year's Day. Thus, Dartmouth students have 6 weeks between these two quarters to do whatever they want! Some go home for rest, others stay on campus, and some, like myself, look for opportunities to don new hats other than being a student. DCSI's 3-week intensive internship falls between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and students volunteer for a non-profit in their hometown or in Hanover while simultaneously meeting with DCSI staff to create a poster attempting to solve local community problems. Additionally, DCSI provides students with a $1,500 stipend so that cost is not a barrier to the program.
I had the opportunity to work for a vision clinic that provides free eye care to people with limited insurance. Because I am on the pre-health track, this was a great opportunity to gain clinical experience while helping people in my community. About 30 students complete the internship every year, and students do a variety of internships. During the beginning of winter term, students present the poster they created with the social problem their non-profit organization sought to answer (the header photo is part of my poster!). For people interested in research on campus, this is a great way to dip your toe in the water!
Overall, this was a great experience and a great example of the ways Dartmouth supports students' work all over the world.
