Moose at Moosilauke!
When I was accepted into Dartmouth, my family and I shopped for a warm sleeping bag and camping essentials. These were for First Year Trips, a tradition I'd read about countless times on the People Places Pines blog. My trip, "Cabin Camping and Cooking," was a blast! We stayed in a huge cabin, paddleboarded, and cooked delicious meals for three days. On the final day, we traveled to the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge to meet other first years. One of the most memorable experiences was the five-course dinner. The best part? Students can return to Moosilauke throughout the year for this incredible free dinner again!
So, this Friday, a couple of friends and I decided to drive to the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. The hour-long trip was absolutely worth it. We arrived a little late and missed the scrumptious salad I had loved during my First Year Trips. But we soon indulged in garlic bread with garlic-parsley butter, which was soft, buttery, and divine. Next came the tomato soup, so good that my friend couldn't resist getting seconds. The main course, eggplant parm, was a delightful mix of eggplant and parmesan cheese. Even my picky-eater friend enjoyed it! By the fourth course, I was stuffed but anticipating dessert.
Before dessert, the student-run kitchen crew introduced themselves, making the meal even more impressive! We enjoyed a short storytime with one of the chefs reading "Ferdinand" to us. For dessert, we savored lemon cookies, blueberry crumble, and vanilla ice cream. I wish we could have had seconds!
After devouring our treats, we went downstairs to admire the breathtaking sunset. The view was stunning – blooming flowers, green fields, a trickling stream, and a pink sky.
On our drive back, we passed several moose signs. My friend from Maine shared stories of his two previous moose encounters. Just as my other two friends were lamenting never having seen a moose, our car abruptly stopped. I looked out the window and couldn't believe my eyes—WE SAW A MOOSE! It was a smaller one (still dangerous), but the excitement was real. We quickly swerved and continued our journey home, chatting about the thrilling encounter. The ride to and from Moosilauke was long, but it was absolutely worth every moment!
