How Do People Get Around on Campus and in Town?
One of the most common questions I get on tours is, "How do people get around on campus?" or "Do you really need a car?".
Our campus is relatively small compared to other college campuses. When I asked Google Maps the farthest two points on campus, it told me it was exactly a 15-minute walk. Because of this, the vast majority of people walk around campus, especially because parking is quite limited on campus grounds.
Dartmouth's town is called Hanover, which is a 2-minute walk from campus. It boasts two dozen restaurants, a CVS Pharmacy, five clothing shops, and a gas station, so the vast majority of what students need is an easy walk from campus. The town of Hanover itself is located in an area called the Upper Valley, which includes about 30,000 people with the neighboring towns of Lebanon, West Lebanon, and White River Junction. There is a fantastic free transit bus service called Advanced Transit that runs every five minutes and connects students to places like Target, Walmart, Dartmouth Health Hospital, and other restaurants in neighboring towns.
Another option for transportation are the Zipcars scattered around campus. These are cars you can rent by the hour which are a relatively cheap option at about $10 per hour. For day trips, these can be great options.
The Dartmouth Coach also runs every hour every day to Boston as well as twice a day to New York City.
Because of all of this, having a car on campus is really not necessary. In fact, first years are not even allowed to have cars on campus. However, if you do have a car, there are a couple of different places you can park it. Dartmouth has a parking lot called A Lot that is about a 20-minute walk from campus; you can also park at different Greek houses that rent parking spots.
I brought my car this year, and I have used it honestly less than I thought I would have, making me realize that campus is really accessible!
