Hi and welcome! My name is Sasha, and I'm a '29 from Chernivtsi, Ukraine. I love all things language-related and plan to study QSS and Linguistics. I'm obsessed with coffee, and in my free time, I'm usually at a café, getting some work done or catching up with friends. I'm so excited to share my Dartmouth journey with you!

      Favorite Class: COGS 1: Introduction to Cognitive Science

      Before taking COGS 1, I didn't even know what cognitive science was. I came out of the first lecture 99% sure I wanted to major in it! COGS 1 gives a great overview of multiple areas: anthropology and linguistics, AI and neuroscience, and more. The lectures were super engaging; we stared at optical illusions, played economic games with real money and created our own 'Turing tests.' I'd recommend this course to anyone who loves interdisciplinary fields and wants to take a deep dive into the human mind (not just the brain, but mind)!

      Favorite Class: LING 10: Statistics for Linguistics

      In Statistics for Linguistics, I learned statistical methods in the programming language R. Professor Coto Solano is great: he emphasized applying statistics to practical linguistic questions and recognizing misinformation and misleading data. I got to develop a project analyzing conflict-related terminology in news headlines, which was super fun and especially close to my heart.

      Favorite Class: INTS 15: Violence and Security

      INTS 15 taught me to engage with complicated, often disturbing subjects in an academic setting instead of shying away from them. Starting with the first week's topic, "Is the world getting more or less violent?", we dove into the reasons behind global conflicts, the history of violence, peacekeeping, and international law. Professor Shackelford was amazing and really connected the material to current events: she'd start every class with a news roundup, and we'd apply the principles we'd learned to analyze the most recent issues.
