I have grown to love the look of Dartmouth under many inches of snow (the picture above is the view from my window). I will never forget my first snow, standing under a lamppost and watching the little flakes hit the ground. I did not think I would ever tire of it, but I must admit that I have succumbed to the pulls of unappreciation, after going through 3 winters. The days that it doesn't snow are difficult, as the snow on the ground starts to resemble the earth beneath it, and everything is wet and mushy.

Now in my fourth winter, I would like to entertain the thought that I am able to thrive in the winter, despite the freezing temperatures and mushy snow. My ankle length puffer coat hangs mostly unused in my closet, as I have learnt to layer and accessorize better than before. My favourite winter accessory are earmuffs! I cannot function when my ears are cold, and they have been a game changer in keeping me warm.

Dartmouth has so many winter activities to help students have fun in the cold. You can sign up for a PE class that will teach you how to snowboard, ski or ice skate! There are also clubs and organizations on campus who will host funded trips to the Dartmouth Skiway. I have been able to snowboard, ski and skate during my time here! I took ice skating last winter as a PE class and it is undoubtedly my favourite winter activity.

Outside of making time for fun winter activities, I think it is vital to make time to spend with your friends and loved ones. If nature itself slows down for a few months, then we should be allowed to slow down as well. This winter, I have been prioritizing waking up early, finishing my work before dinner, and spending quality time with my friends. We mostly watch movies and have existential crises. There have been many cups of hot chocolate already consumed and I am looking forward to a gentle and calming winter term!
