One of our required textbooks for English 001!

As an English major, there are a couple of classes that are needed to be completed before you graduate. Two of these classes have to do with literary histories, such as English 001, which looks at literature up to the 17th century. English 002 looks at literature from the mid-17th century to the 19th century. Finally, English 003 looks at literature from the 20th century to the present.

For this term, I decided to finish this requirement by getting my second literary history course, English 001. To be completely honest, my main goal in completing this class was to get the major requirement, not necessarily because I was super excited about the course material. Don't get me wrong, all the classes I have taken at Dartmouth are always interesting, but sometimes I choose a class because it can help fulfill a major requirement or distributive.

The class looks at various literature from this time period, looking at themes, modes, genres, and character archetypes. We have read parts of The Canterbury Tales, tales from the Matter of Britain, as well as various poetry. It has surprisingly become one of my favorite classes ever, with a great professor whose excitement for the topics makes us students more excited to learn.

I think this happens a lot at Dartmouth. A lot of students go into a class, perhaps in a topic or department, they are not usually interested in, and fall in love with the class or subject. Some people, like myself, even change their majors(I came to Dartmouth as a Government major, and now I am a History and English major!) College is all about trying new things and finding what you are passionate about. So whether you come to Dartmouth or not, try a class in a subject that you don't know much about. You might just fall in love with it!
