Kicking off our first weekend in Toulouse, students in our program went on a day trip to the nearby town of Carcassonne, a place that feels almost suspended in time.

Best known for its medieval fortified city, Carcassonne was a major stronghold during the Middle Ages, with its double-walled ramparts, watchtowers, and winding stone streets offering a glimpse into centuries of conflict, trade, and everyday life. Walking through the citadel felt like stepping into a living history book—one where the past is not only preserved but still deeply present. Beyond its architecture, Carcassonne is also celebrated for its regional cuisine, most famously cassoulet, the hearty, slow-cooked dish of beans, meat, and duck that reflects the warmth and abundance of southern French food culture.

We explored Carcassonne together by walking along the ramparts, looking out over the surrounding countryside, and wandering through the narrow streets within the medieval citadel. In between, we stopped at small cafés and restaurants, trying regional food and soaking in the slower pace of the town. Moving through the city on foot made the experience feel intimate and communal, as if we were discovering Carcassonne piece by piece together.

What I appreciated most about this trip was the shared enthusiasm everyone brought with them. Every student seemed genuinely eager to explore the areas surrounding Toulouse—not just the sights, but the history, culture, and food that give these places their character. As one of only three juniors in the program, I found myself getting to know many sophomores I hadn't interacted with before, meeting a side of the Dartmouth community that I might never have encountered on campus. These spontaneously organized group trips have been some of the most meaningful moments so far, creating easy, unforced opportunities to connect, talk, and build friendships while discovering new places together.
