A photo of the Blue Ridge Mountains over a small farm hill

Hello, hello, and welcome to The Woods! I'm Sarah, a first-year (or '29 in official Dartmouth terms, since I will be graduating in 2029) here at Dartmouth. I'm from the small town of Burnsville, North Carolina, about an hour outside of Asheville, NC and tucked in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Almost exactly 1,000 miles from campus and along the same mountain range, there are a lot of similarities (and differences) between my hometown and the woods where I'll spend the next four years—but more on that in another post.

Pictured is a girl laughing and sitting on a stone wall. In the background, a road overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Literally just me in North Carolina. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains!

In terms of academics, I'm definitely still exploring my options! At Dartmouth, you can't declare until your sophomore year, which encourages students to truly explore and take advantage of the liberal arts curriculum. I'm planning to major in Government with a minor in Public Policy, but I'm also keeping an eye out for any other interesting majors and subjects around campus. On campus, I'm involved in several global and foreign affairs clubs, including the World Outlook Journal, the World Affairs Council, and Model UN. I also love being part of the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC), whether through Ledyard Canoe Club, Cabin n' Trail, or VHOC (Viva Hardigg Outdoor Club, named for the first female president of the DOC and dedicated to encouraging underrepresented gender identities in the outdoors).

Studying in Sanborn Library!

Outside of clubs, I love petting really cute dogs on campus, consuming a ridiculous amount of Collis Cafe smoothies, attending live music events on campus (like Fallapalooza or Friday Night Rock), and discovering hidden and wonderful places on campus to study.

My friend and I spent a sunny evening on the Green. One day we met Waffles, the most amazing Goldendoodle. Waffles' owner is an Alumni we ran into and had a great chat with while she was visting campus!

I chose Dartmouth for a number of reasons; as a Questbridge National Match Scholar, Dartmouth offers incredible affordability, financial aid, and community support that are deeply necessary to me as an FGLI (first-generation, low-income) student. I attended Dartmouth Bound, Dartmouth's fly-in program offered the summer before one's senior year, where I fell fully in love with Dartmouth's campus, community, and offerings. I saw Dartmouth as a place that provided both the most opportunities and the most ways to take advantage of them, regardless of background. Whether through studying abroad, conducting undergraduate research, or various internship funding opportunities, I knew Dartmouth would cater to the broad experiences I was hoping to achieve in college—and I certainly haven't been disappointed.

Throughout my blog, I hope to be able to highlight my experiences and perspectives here at Dartmouth in a broad lens, whether that be through DOC Trips, winterim (the six-week break between fall and winter term) internships, or the various amazing clubs on campus. Follow along and explore Dartmouth with me!
