Ode to the Collis Smoothie
This post is dedicated to one of the little things that has had a surprisingly big affect on my college experience. It was fall of 2014 (my first term at Dartmouth), and I soon discovered Collis Cafe, Dartmouth’s most acclaimed dining option. Collis is a one-stop made to order shop that immediately won me over, especially the smoothie station. It was love at first sight for me, but my feelings were unfortunately unrequited. At Collis, there is no smoothie menu. Instead, there’s simply a list of all the ingredients at your disposal. Every combination I tried left something to be desired.
Eventually, I began to lose hope. One day, I was meeting a friend for dinner, and I observed the confidence in which she made her order. I was inspired to try my luck again and recited her order back to the attendant. That day my life was changed for the better because the smoothie station finally loved me back. For the last three and a half years, I have made the same smoothie order at Collis (with the recent addition of Kale last term). I have run with five minutes left before closing time and watched parts of my smoothie freeze in my straw on the walk home in -11 degree weather. I have also found comfort in them on a particularly hot day and made a few friends while waiting in line. On a campus that’s constantly moving forward, it’s comforting to enjoy the things that stay the same.
