Class in Review: First-Year Seminar
Welcome back to my series where I review the classes that I have taken so far! I hope that these reviews can help you decide how to go about choosing courses for each term. For this week's blog, I will be discussing my First-Year Seminar, which was titled Seriality in Pop Culture. The First-Year Seminar class is required for all first-year students, and you will take this class as part of your First-Year Writing requirement.
I took this class with Professor York, a Lecturer at the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric here at Dartmouth. The First-Year Writing and Seminar courses only have about 15 students in each class, which makes it super easy to get to know both the professor and the other students. The course structure consisted of discussion (which I prefer!) where we discussed all things pop culture, ranging from television shows to comic books. The entire premise of the course was to dive deep into these types of media and analyze the seriality present (essentially, whether or not these types of media follow a sequential order when telling their stories). Professor York was just amazing. She really wanted us to succeed in the class, so she hosted numerous office hours and stayed after class to help with anything. She also created PowerPoints so we could visualize what exactly we were doing in class, which helped tremendously. She is one of the most accommodating professors I have had here!

With regards to assignments in this class, we had daily reading homework (a short paragraph for each), 3 papers throughout the term, and a participation grade. The readings were not time consuming at all but allowed us to think critically about the media we were analyzing in class. As long as you came to class and contributed meaningfully to the discussions we were having, then that counted as participation. However, my favorite part about this class was most definitely the papers we wrote. They were pretty open-ended, which made it much less stressful when thinking about topics. I got to write my final essay about WandaVision (as you can see in the cover picture) which just shows how fun this class is! We got to write self-assessments for each essay, where we assign a grade and give comments about what we did well and what we could improve on. Professor York would then take that into account when grading each essay, which I think is amazing

Overall, this has been one of the most rewarding classes I have taken so far, so take this class if you can for your First-Year Seminar!
