The Philosophy Junior Honors Seminar is a small, not-for-credit seminar that junior Philosophy majors who have a cumulative average GPA of at 3.33 overall and 3.50 in Philosophy or above can take. This seminar is a prerequisite in order to write a thesis during senior year. When I received an invitation to take this seminar during my sophomore summer, I was slightly hesitant. My courseload, while fewer in terms of numbers, was more rigorous than previous teams. Additionally, I never considered writing a thesis. Still, the opportunity to take such a small seminar and do independent Philosophy research was quite appealing, so I decided to wait until a subsequent term. When junior fall rolled around and I received another email inviting me to take the course, I did not hesitate to say, "Yes!"

My seminar took place in Thornton Hall, pictured above.

Different professors direct the honors seminar every term, and I was fortunate enough to take it with Professor Susan Brison, whose areas of interest line up well with mine. I had taken PHIL 22: Feminism and Philosophy with her my sophomore spring, which happened to be my favorite class that term, so I knew I was in good hands. That fall, the seminar consisted of me, two classmates whom I knew from previous classes, and the professor! We met 4-5 times that term. Before each meeting, we would write or refine a draft of a potential thesis proposal and read each other's work. During our meetings, we asked each other questions and received feedback for every proposal. Philosophy as a whole is fascinating, as there are so many different areas. Coincidentally enough, we were all interested in ethics, which led to a lot of back-and-forth discussions that made the 90-minute meetings fly by. The seminar was so small (there were only 4 people, including the professor!), and I ended up learning a lot from my professor and classmates! We often found ourselves continuing our conversations even when the seminar was over.

Taking a Philosophy Junior Honors Seminar was one of my highlights during my junior fall! Even if you're not thinking of writing a thesis, I highly recommend taking it.
